NJ Legal Requirement & Delran BOE Policy for G&T Identification

NJ Administrative Code 18A:35-35 and Delran BOE Policy 2464 state, "’Gifted and talented student’ means a student who possesses or demonstrates a high level of ability in one or more content areas when compared to his chronological peers in the school district and who requires modifications of his educational program if he is to achieve in accordance with his capabilities.”

High Achieving vs High Ability

The legal definition of Gifted & Talented requires us to identify students of high ability in comparison with his/her chronological peers. It’s important to understand the difference between high achieving students and high ability students, which can sometimes overlap, but do not always overlap. “While high achievers may also be gifted, some high achieving students may not technically be considered gifted. Additionally, some gifted students may not do well in school for a variety of reasons.” (Bainbridge 2021)  More information about the difference between high ability and high achievement can be found in this article.

Standards for Gifted Programming

The Gifted Programming Standards were most recently updated in 2019 by the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC). The Delran Township School District utilizes these standards when developing gifted and talented programming.
